Baroque flute after Hotteterre (c1710)

This is a copy of one of the best examples of an early 18th century French flute, which is in Graz Landesmuseum, Austria. It is a beautiful instrument, made of ebony with a silver key and ivory mounts. It plays a whole tone below modern pitch (a’=392Hz) and has a strong, mellow tone, ideal for the performance of French baroque music.
Also available in boxwood, with a brass or silver key, this gives the flute a slightly more mellow, flexible tone. The pitch can be raised to a’=415 but not without considerable loss of its characteristic sound. Performance at modern pitch is quite feasible by transposing up a tone.
