Classical clarinet in B flat after Heinrich Grenser (c.1800)
This clarinet is one of the German type, and has nine brass keys. The original is in the Bate collection and has the five keys typical of early classical clarinets, plus a trill key for the right forefinger and cross keys for B flat, E flat and F.
Unusually, it has a double third hole for C#. This extra keywork facilitates performance of classical and early romantic music. The clarinet is made of unstained boxwood with ivory mounts, and is pitched at around a’=437Hz (flexible according to reed and technique).
A version in A is now available, based on the same original.
An optional tenth key can be provided for C# (G#) instead of the double third hole, and the pitch can be varied slightly to order. The mouthpiece (missing on the original) is based on an excellent ivory mouthpiece from a contemporary instrument of similar bore by the same maker. This can be supplied in ebony, boxwood, imitation ivory or ebonite. A version of this instrument is now available in A.
